Breiter Arche is a small country in the western area of the Great Continent, with mountains in the lower half and green fields in the north. The center and north of the country are full of industrial towns that make consumer goods such as clothing, clocks and foodstuffs for their own use and use in the neighboring countries, mostly using water and animal power but also using small amounts of magic.
The nation is governed by a king and his council of elders, with the elders being drawn from the different regions and the throne being occupied by representatives from several different noble families, who take turns appointing a king from their ranks. This arrangement has remained stable for hundreds of years, allowing Breiter Arche to be one of the most stable countries with the highest standard of living in the Great Continent.
The dominant language is Sprachten, with many people in the industrial towns also speaking Tin and Parlet (the language of the neighboring nation of Grossefin) to facilitate trade. About 80 percent of the people practice the Old Religion of the area, which reveres Ulli Spatlesen (the Maid of the Harvest) and Vinn Frulint (the Youth of Spring). About 10 percent worship the Spring Maiden and the other 10 percent are either non-religious or practice other religions. However, life is hard for those who do not practice the Old Religion, because it is the official state faith and other religions, while not illegal, are not really allowed either.
The inhabitants of the country are known collectively as Breiten. Their currency is the Gelden, valued generally around equally with the Tin Mawr librum.
