Super Mario Bros by TVsKyle Super Mario Bros by TVsKyle
So, why haven't they attempted to make a Mario cartoon since DIC's miserable efforts in the late 80s/ early 90s? Sonic's had more than his fair share, but not Mario. Everyone would watch that. I wish I could make it. This is what I'd want to use as my cast of regulars if I ever got to make one. That would be a dream gig. Even if I only got to do it as a comic. What would be really fun is making Mario shorts specifically for the Wii's Nintendo Channel. A boy can dream.

EDIT: Hi everybody! First off, thank you so much for the overwhelming response to this piece. I worked very hard on it, and it's nice to know that you folks like seeing Mario this way.

I want to warn, however, that this is not the place to tell me your opinion of various Mario games nor is it a place to tell me about imaginary Mario anime that involves Waluigi and nudity.
Dig? A'thankyou.

With absolutely nothing interesting to critique for the month of October, I seem to be destined to critique yet another Super Mario piece.

One thing that particularly peaked my interest, aside from the usual quality of your work, is the description. Basically it describes that this is what could be the outcome if you were to design a new Super Mario cartoon. Therefore, I try to keep this in mind, rather than to judge this solely on its own merits. I believe it's fair to presume that you wanted critiques to evaluate whether these designs could actually work as a TV series.

Since I've seen your animated work, including a full blown pilot for a series pitched to Nickelodeon, I can actually imagine these designs as moving characters. Your style of fast-paced storytelling would be perfect for something like Super Mario, since it usually doesn't go any further than "lol, Peach got kidnapped again". Judging from your selection of characters, it seems that the brothers and their ilk are going to have to deal with five villains, opposed to just Bowser, which I think is better than the whole new-setting-for-every-episode concept of the earlier shows. There could even be some rivalry amongst the villains, it practically writes itself.

Having seen the earlier shows, this seems to be a mix between the old and the new. The fact that they're all based on their more recent designs makes them more consistent. The inclusion of Wario and Waluigi adds abundant quantities of cartoon hilarity, especially since Wario's usually depicted in a typical anime setting. The inclusion of Daisy and Perry the freakin' talking umbrella removes Peach from the odd female role in the show, and gives her someone who will put her into silly trouble for sure.

The question remains if the current generation of gamers who grew up on the polished 3D designs of the Mario characters are going to accept these bold, asymmetrical 2D designs. You've got consistency on your side, that's for sure. It could be your advantage, and it has a strong, loyal fan base. Still, these designs are radically different, and the general public may not like it until they see the actual animation.

And with that, I end this critique before it runs out of hand. This is definitely one of those things that raises some interesting questions about 2D and 3D designs.

That is one very brilliant, amazing, and interesting deviation! Kyle, you've done an awesome job with this piece! What a great idea you have conceived for a Super Mario cartoon series - your series, if it were greenlighted, would have an incredible fanbase and become the number-one, top-rated show on its slot on national cable television, just as "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" was, at one point, the top-rated show for its own time slot.

With the characters shown in this illustration, among many others, this series would appear to span even the farthest reaches of the Marioverse, and use designs that are even more consistent than that miserable DiC cartoon trilogy. It looks like you're probably going to be writing storylines that will endeavor to prove to Mario fanatics that there's more to the franchise than just the usual "Bowser has kidnapped the princess" plots. I've outgrown video games myself, but if I were still obsessed with them as I was when I was a young lad, I'd be very much excited about this matter! I'd hope for a cast of thousands (including all the established Mario franchise characters and just as many newcomers), plus hordes of major plot twists and a few surprises to boot.

Your idea for a cartoon about the Marioverse has inspired me to create my own idea for a Super Mario TV show - a program which I've christened "The (All-New) Super Mario Super Extravaganza," whose title contains a friendly reference to the working title "Mario Extravaganza" which was given to the Super NES compilation cartridge "Super Mario All-Stars" when it was being developed. I'm presently working on tons of character and scenario concepts for that show; some of these can be seen in this gallery). Go see them for yourself - my character illustrations portray everyone from core Marioverse icons to those characters who simply aren't given the appreciation they deserve, and they also throw in tons of interesting original characters who feel like they really belong in the Mario universe and in the lives of one or more returning cast members.

Congratulations, Kyle! Your work is fantastic and very interesting! I give my regards to you, my good friend!

This would make a fantastic Mario show. I love how you've included so man villains, I can just imagine, Bowser, Wart, Donkey Kong, and Warrio factions all at war with each other as well as Mario and crew. The art style reminds me of Ren and Stimpy, minus the gross out crap. This is just a fantastic piece.

AMAZING! :D if they made a new Mario cartoon and used your designs I'd flip! :D I'm a big fan of the designs they look similar to the style of a Cartoon Network animation! Keep up the good work! :)

Each of these characters look so wacky and abstract; superb work on this! I cannot get over Waluigi's face.
